Five years to the day that you launch this campaign, my life was changed forever by gun violence. My son DeAndre was shot in the head by a stray bullet.
Nothing in our lives has ever been the same. I had to become 100 percent devoted to my son’s health and well-being. Cleaning trachs, changing adult-sized diapers and readjusting my son in a hospital bed for comfort became my new normal. His little brother became my assistant. He was no longer seeking the protection of his big brother because he was now the protector. I didn’t lose my son in the physical sense, but he had lost everything that he had ever hoped to be.
