CommUNITY Growth

January 22 – 26, 2024 will mark the sixth annual National Gun Violence Survivors Week — a time when we come together to share and amplify the stories and voices of gun violence survivors who live with the impact of gun violence every day of the year.

Every day in America, at least 120 people are shot and killed, more than 200 are shot and wounded, and countless others experience the collective trauma of gun violence.

This year, National Gun Violence Survivors Week will be highlighting the role of gun violence survivors as changemakers who are leading efforts to end gun violence by building, strengthening and unifying their communities.

Throughout the week, we’ll be uplifting the work of survivors across the country and lived experiences with gun violence to highlight the ripple effect of trauma caused by gun violence and the collective action these changemakers are taking to fortify their communities and move towards healing.

Join National Gun Violence Survivors Week this year and be a part of the movement towards CommUNITY Growth, where survivors lead the way towards a brighter, safer future.

Why it matters

Gun violence in any form can leave a lasting impact — whether someone has witnessed an act of gun violence, been threatened or wounded with a gun, or had someone they cared for wounded or killed with a gun. This includes but is not limited to gun homicides, police violence, gun suicides, intimate partner violence involving a gun, mass shootings, and unintentional shootings.

The trauma from gun violence ripples farther than we can imagine, impacting people across generations and geography. Beyond those shot and wounded or killed, families, friends, neighbors and extended communities that share the same identities as victims of gun violence feel the hurt when gun violence occurs.

Behind every gun violence statistic are countless stories — of parents who never got to kiss their kids goodbye, gunshot victims living with physical and emotional wounds, entire families heartbroken by gun suicide, or witnesses of gun crimes living with trauma. During National Gun Violence Survivors Week, we take stock of the terrible human toll of America’s gun violence crisis and recommit ourselves to honoring survivors with action.
