I’m not sure if this story applies to gun violence. However, my uncle, whom I never knew, was a bright young man and star athlete in his hometown. He was a light in my mother’s family. The one who was deemed Most Likely to Succeed. His life was cut short when he and his high school sweetheart got into a fight: He shot himself with a gun that he took from his father’s belongings.
My mother’s life was never the same, and her family’s life took a terrible turn for the worse after this catastrophic event. If he never had access to that gun, my uncle would be here today, and my mother’s family would have been OK. I am a strong believer and advocate for gun safety, and in memory of my mother and her entire family, I stand with anyone who has ever been affected by this subject to change these laws.
