I survived the Columbine shooting over 20 years ago. I was a 16-year-old sophomore the day I learned the sound of my friend Lance screaming in pain and the sound of bullets passing by my head.
Surviving is one of the things that led me into teaching, and anxiety about continued school shootings is one of the things leading me to leave teaching after nearly 15 years. I remember the fear and trauma and pain of that day every time there’s another school tragedy. It will never leave me. I hope we can find a way to lessen shootings in the future.
