Hello. My story is about my son, Matthew. He was only 18 years old. Matthew was an easygoing, loving young man who enjoyed helping others. He was very intelligent, had a beautiful smile, and aspirations to join the Air Force. Twenty-one years ago, while standing with a couple of friends in front of our house, he was shot and killed by someone he didn’t know. The man wanted to rob him, but he didn’t have anything on him to rob.
My journey has been tough, but my faith, family and friends have seen me through. We have no justice. I was determined not to let Matthew die in vain. I started a memorial garden for bereaved parents. I’m actively involved in Bereaved Parents of the USA. I started a support group for parents whose children died by murder. I’ve spoken in criminal justice classes to tell my story along with my Victim’s advocate. Now I’m involved in Moms Demand Action. It’s hard but possible to survive and help others. It’s possible to continue and enjoy life.
