Brave Dave’s Ma

In honor of David Joshua

Our eldest son, David, was an amazing human — a kind, gentle old soul, a protector. He deserved to live, love and laugh. We love, miss and remember him every day. His life matters.

He is our hero. We are proud, though it never should have been, if not for a monster with a gun. The horrible night Dave was executed at 23 years young by a stranger from hell, 18 years ago, was just the beginning of our family’s life sentence of pain. He was shot once in the heart through his own back door while saving the lives of his sister and many friends, who all witnessed his death. Our entire family was at the hospital, begging them to save him. Imagine that …

Our family of six went to five; our entire world was turned upside down in a flash. The world we knew was gone. One day we had four children to love, the next, only three. We couldn’t believe the world was still spinning. Our “surviving” children suffered terribly and still do to this day. Our grandchildren mourn an uncle they will never meet. The aftermath of gun violence affects generations to come — a heartbreak that never heals.
