On October 12, 2021, my oldest son, Ga’Kobie Jones, 19, along with two other young men were murdered inside his home by gun violence. In the midst of such a horrific moment, my one-year-old grandson was wounded in the hand and leg while in the arms of his father. Over the last 10 months, I have struggled with how I can turn my pain into passion and purpose. I have always been known to give back to the community by feeding and clothing those in need, encouraging, inspiring and motivating someone to look for the silver lining during their trials and tribulations. Our city has been hit hard with the scourge of gun violence, which affects those of all ages — especially our young people. Many of us carry wounds that seem to never heal, but that does not mean we cannot keep memories alive by doing something positive.
