In 1999, I was a freshman at Columbine High School. I was in the building for the duration of the massacre and to this day have tremendous anxiety about school safety. Having my own children training and practicing for the very event that was my worst nightmare is a special kind of torture that many of us school shooting survivors must battle with daily. In 2018 I served as a founding director for the Student Gun Violence Summit in Washington D.C. because I believe our students have the right to demand safety in their schools. My life will never be simple or pleasant as long as they must train for active shooter drills.
