total hearts received for Moments That Survive

Jolea

My mother was a law enforcement officer. She and my father had an abusive relationship due to my father’s battle with alcoholism. After one night of heavy drinking, my father took my mother’s gun and shot her in the breast. She survived because she was able to use her training to get the gun out of his hands. This tore my extended family apart — none of us talked to my grandmother or aunt and uncles again. They all testified against my mother in court. My father passed away in prison two years later. Alone. My mother recovered physically but suffers from PTSD. Ultimately, it ended her career.

Reacting shows support for gun violence survivors.
