Joshua. A Brother's Keeper

In honor of William Joshua Hilton

My brother Josh celebrated his birthday on October 1, 2006 and was murdered the next day. Josh and his close friend were ambushed and shot multiple times at close range. When arriving on the scene (neighborhood), I witnessed the cops cover Josh in a white sheet. I was filled with rage, and I verbally attacked his father who was addicted to drugs and alcohol.

I have no siblings and will never be an uncle, and his murder broke me mentally. As a Christian, I wanted to kill myself because of the pain. I lost my job, I feared going outside, I didn’t eat, and I feared someone was going to kill me. A year later a trial was set for the two perpetrators. They both received life in prison.

Years have gone by, and it’s still fresh in my mind. It’s still difficult. They said it will get better with time. I didn’t believe it, but years later, I’ve realized it has. I made a promise to my brother, and I plan to keep it. Pain doesn’t last forever. My brother doesn’t have to suffer anymore. Love Amir
