Jovani Nero Tovar, my boyfriend, was shot and killed in 2001, while he was trying to help a young woman from being harmed. Jovani was 22 years old. He was an aspiring chef, a rugby player, and a hard worker. He gave the greatest hugs, he was always laughing, he was known for random acts of kindness, and he loved life. He was a son, brother, best friend, colleague, student—and he was loved very much. Every day I think of Jovani and I think of the senseless tormenting pain caused by gun violence. Together, we can make a difference.
