In 2009, I suffered a psychotic break. My roommate was gone, but he had a 12-gauge shotgun in his room. Unable to distinguish what was real from what was not, I loaded it, placed the barrel under my chin and pulled the trigger. Fortunately, it failed to fire.
Allowing firearms to remain unsecured next to ammunition should not be allowed. Further, having a firearm in a residence with someone who suffers from severe, persistent mental illness is a bad idea, especially if they suffer from a psychotic disorder, as I do. I got lucky. Really, really lucky. Most people do not, but we can change that if we work together.
