Gun violence reshaped my life in unimaginable ways. Growing up, I endured sexual assault, teen dating violence and domestic abuse. Violence was not just personal — it surrounded me, a relentless presence of fear and loss.
My personal encounters with gun violence were harrowing. I was held at gunpoint and forced into submission, a moment that shattered my sense of safety. Even more haunting, my former mother-in-law pointed a sawed-off shotgun at my pregnant belly and pulled the trigger. Miraculously, the gun jammed.
That terrifying moment, coupled with years of domestic violence in my previous marriage, was a turning point. Eventually, I found the strength to leave and began the arduous healing journey. In 2023, I channeled my pain into purpose by founding Unmute Yourself, Inc., a survivor-centered nonprofit committed to empowering those impacted by violence. Through trauma-informed programs like art therapy, education, and vocational training, we help survivors reclaim their voices and build resilience.
Today, my story is a rallying cry for change — a testament to the power of courage and connection. Join me in amplifying voices, breaking cycles of violence, and transforming survival into legacy. Together, we can create a world where every survivor is heard, supported and celebrated.
